Community Career Center Hosts Lean In Circle

October 5 2015

Today the Community Career Center kicked off a Lean In Circle at its 1815 W. Diehl Road, Suite 900, Naperville, IL, office. Lean In Circles are designed as a peer-to-peer mentoring network. This circle included 16 women of all fields and career tenure who were able to freely and confidentially speak about the professional challenges they have faced being women in the workforce. At the conclusion of the meeting, Becky Brillon, Program Director, announced that the Center will be hosting a monthly circle, saying the program is a positive addition to ongoing efforts to empower job seekers and build collaboration between attendees – both currently employed and those in transition. The group is open to all women, at any point in their career.

"The Community Career Center is a learning organization, and Lean In Circles give our job seekers a way to do what needs to be done: learn through mentorship, peer to peer and bottom up, by brainstorming with colleagues and by being able to let their guard down," Brillon said.

One of the objectives of the first meeting was to develop group goals to focus on for future meetings. The newly formed goals of the group are

Prepare and practice a communication style that conveys self-value and confidence in an assertive way during one-on-one networking meetings, interviews and/or with others in any work-like setting. (Interview techniques, wardrobe, elevator pitch, opportunity follow-up.)

Work to perfect our job search tools which include a resume, handbill, leave-behind, online applications.

Be mindful and work to answer the question, “How are you a better employee NOW than when you left your last position?” (Strategic Volunteering, Learning, Skills-Building, Career Goals)

Plan, learn about, and provide self-care (mental, physical, spiritual, emotional…whole well-being.)

Lean In Circles provide all women an opportunity to learn and grow from each other. The movement is based on the best-selling book titled, Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, by Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook.
